Cover Crop Innovators Video Series
Steve Groff and his family farm 225 acres of cash grain crops, 25 acres of pumpkins and two acres of high tunnel tomatoes in Lancaster County, Penn. Cover crops are used purposefully and some fields have not been tilled for over 35 years. His Cedar Meadow Farm has been the recipient of numerous national, state and local awards, and Steve speaks internationally about his cropping strategies. Steve is the founder of Cover Crop Solutions, a national cover crop seed business featuring Tillage Radish® and other new and emerging cover crops. He manages over 400 replicated cover crop research plots on his farm to document the investment of cover crops and how to make them effectively increase profits. Steve and his wife Cheri have two girls in college and a 17-year-old son who does all the work when dad is away at speaking events.
In this video, Groff discusses why he started using cover crops in the 1990s, and outlines the many benefits they can offer. Very involved in on-farm research collaborations, he offers tips to farmers thinking about starting with cover crops: "Before you buy a bag of seed, educate yourself."
In this video, Groff highlights the importance of cover crops in adding diversity to typical crop rotations as a means of improving soil health.
