Feasibility of growing vegetables with groundhogs present

I'd be grateful for any information that can be provided regarding the
feasibility of growing several acres of vegetables with a healthy
population of groundhogs/woodchucks present.

Would a few patches of alfalfa and clover satisfy them sufficiently that
they would avoid some other crops? Someone told me that they don't go
after tomatoes that much. Can others confirm that? What other vegetables
would they be least likely to sample heavily?

Thanks,
