Totally contaminated with sewage because both the water mains and the
sewers leak and cross-contamination is inevitable whenever water
pressure in the mains drops. I think the water system in Cochabamba
dates from about 1920, and I've heard it estimated that only about half
of what goes into the mains ever makes it into a home.
Bolivia may be poor, but the people are generally well-fed. There are
exceptions (of course), but there are still enough people on the land
that relatively abundant food makes it into the city.
