Shep Ogden (of Cook's Garden seed company) lecture was superb last night at
the National Conservation Training Center outside of Shepherdstown, WV .
Although his presentation was marred by technical difficulties (none of
them Shep's fault), he held the audience's interest with his tales of the
extremes organic seedsmen go to insure the quality of their seed and to
find new varieties (or, more appropriately put, OLD varieties.) His slides
are phenomenal; he had many dramatic shots of ACRES of seed crops in
flower. (I'd never seen 8 acres of marigolds before!) I've never been to
his grow-out farm in Vermont. Shots of it showed an impressively well
organized garden filled with what looked like very wonderful black soil.
For cohort of Martha Stewart's, Shep never failed to impress.

Tomorrow at Claymont Court, outside of Charles Town, WV, he will speak on
"Organic Heirloom Flower Gardening," a topic he has written one book and
several articles on. This will include a different set of slides than what
he showed last night.

He has also promised to devote as much additional time as possible on
Saturday to discussing the ethical and economic ramification of genetically
engineered seeds from the perspective of a seed company owner. Genetic
engineering is a topic he has been researching for a forthcoming book. He
has promised to present an examination of GE Bt from a 'fair use'
perspective, and what it means to the organic farmers.

Shep speaks at 1PM tomorrow in the Ballroom of the Historic Claymont
Mansion. For more information, contact Allan Balliett (304) 724-6763 email:

The event is free to the public. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

This is part of an ongoing series of educational presentations at Claymont
Court in support of Gardening for the Future. For more information on our
