Pioneer corn in our growing area is $137/80k unit for a non-Bt variety, and
$172/80k for a Bt variety. These prices are not for the same hybrid simply
witht he Bt gene added though, so it might vary somewhat.
The reason I know this is because we almost ACCIDENTALLY order a Bt variety
without knowing it! Needless to say this was very annoying. We thought
we'd try a few bags of a new variety that looked good in an advertisement,
put in our tentative order, and then found out on the Pioneer website that
this was a Bt variety. Now we have to cancel that variety. In our area Bt
corn does not pay for the extra seed cost very often. If GMO produce is
ever discounted, it will be a big money loser. It also does not reduce
chemical use one iota, contrary to what the biotech boosters will say,
because nobody sprays field corn for corn borer here.
As far as selling price is concerned, I have not heard of any
differences here *yet*, but there were some elevators that would not accept
non-EU approved varieties this past fall.
Dave
P.S. - Has anyone on this list grown "Canamaize" corn? It is an open
pollinated variety that will mature in very short season areas across the
praries, and higher in protein than hybrid corn.
