PRESIDENT NAMES JOSE M. AMADOR
AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR SCIENCE AND EDUCATION
AT THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Jose M.
Amador of Texas as Assistant Secretary for Science and Education at the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Amador is currently the Director of the Texas A&M Research and
Extension Center at Weslaco. As assistant secretary, he would be
responsible for science, technology, and education relating to food and
agriculture, including sustainable agriculture, pest management and
livestock diseases, food safety and food biotechnology education,
nutrition, improved crop and livestock production, access to federal
government information, and international research and education.
Another important aspect of the position involves supporting programs
under USDA's other mission areas and fostering partnerships with
land-grant institutions and the private sector.
"Throughout his professional career, Dr. Amador has had a close
working relationship with USDA. He understands our programs and our
mission. He will bring a wealth of experience and perspective to the
assistant secretary's position, enhancing the use of science and
education to maintain the United States as the world's agriculture
leader," said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy.
