When I finish my academic training, I intend, with a group of
friends, to buy land and start farming. We hope to establish not only
an economically viable farm that keeps us fed directly and turns
enough profit to support our other needs, but also, eventually, a
demonstration and research project dedicated to land-based,
ecologically sustainable living and local self-reliance. Our dream is to
be successful enough both at farming and at outreach that we might
influence conventional farmers to adopt similar methods and
policymakers to facilitate that conversion. But before we try to tell
farmers how to farm, we need to learn how ourselves. To this end
several of us, including myself, are attempting to hire ourselves out
as field hands, with little experience but lots of enthusiasm, and
willing to work for a place to stay and food from the garden. I would
be quite happy to live in my tent if there is some access to running
water, and would prepared to leave at any time were some problem
to arise.
I look forward to hearing from you.
