NATURAL RESOURCES SCIENCE DAY 1994: CALL FOR PAPERS

THEME: APPLICATION OF ECOSYSTEM BASED SCIENCE TO MANAGEMENT
NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Last year Natural Resources Science Day explored the
development of an ecosystem based scientific paradigm.
Experiences in interdisciplinary analysis of natural
resource issues, including socio-economic factors were
presented. This year we go another step to the application
of this scientific paradigm to the management of our natural
resources.

There are at least two elements in this process. First, how
can new, integrated scientific insights be translated into
natural resource management principles and policies. What
is the role of the scientist is providing management options
and risk analysis. Second, known as adaptive management,
how can science be applied to management policy on an
ongoing basis, to adjust and adapt that policy in response
to the specific effects that are resulting from that policy?
What are workable indicators, and how are quality criteria
determined?

Science Day will be held on May 31, in Arlington, Virginia.

The Program Committee is seeking presenters to examine all
aspects of and perspectives on this theme. Please send an
abstract to me by May 1, 1994. Thank you for your interest.
