Dear Sannetters:
Does anyone out there know of the production and use of xerophtic sods, consist
ing of combinations of mosses, sedums, and grasses propagated into fir bark and
peat moss-impregnated rock wool, in the U.S.? This technology, developed two
decades ago in Germany, employs such vegetative mats as green roofs (reduces
stormwater drainage and water contaminants, reduces noise pollution, and provid
es fire retardancy), mitigates the effects of noise pollution when installed on
highway concrete barriers, and may substitute for turfgrass as a median strip
cover in suburban areas. The product is supposedly low maintainance or maintai
nance-free, depending on its use. I'd be interested in hearing of anyone's
experiences with these materials.
