It is disturbing indeed that so many regard discussion of the influence
of funding on scientific research as mere emotionalism. I would welcome
any thoughtful, logical explanations of this veiwpoint, since, as an
educated individual wth a scientific background, I cannot comprehend it.
Motivation can certainly be considered to have an emotional component,
but this cannot be dismissed as insignificant, unless scientists have
suddenly become non-human. This is at the core of ethics, and if we
decide that we need not consider ethics in science, we are all in dire
straits.
