I dread the day when I have to become a geneticist in order
to feel comfortable eating dinner.
A conversation between husband and wife in the
not-too-distant future?:
"Honey, is this sweetcorn the XXY16a viral promoter with the
H-2 vector/tetracycline trigger or the XYX15 viral promoter
with the Z-8 vector/clarithromycin hair trigger-puller?"
"I don't know, sweetheart--the computer crashed last night."
"Do you remember if I sprayed the garden with the
antibiotics last week?
"YOU better remember, sweetheart! We have to trigger the
sterility function properly, or the PISSED [Pinkerton's Seed
Detectives] will bulldoze our crops!!"
[A tense silence for a few minutes.]
"Honey, whatever happened to those organic seeds you use to
have in the basement....."
"Don't know...I think I'm getting Alzheimers(?)."
"Huh...you and me both."
"We better get Doc Johnson and his mobile MRI over here to
see if you have that new "Cauliflower Mosaic Virus-
Cauliflower Neuropathy Encephalopathy, a.k.a CMV-CNE. (No
relation to Mad Cow Disease, a.k.a. nvCJD)."
"If anybody has it, it's you."
"I hope not."
