Michelle and others: it could be argued that the single strongest
longterm legacy of today's current fascination with biotechnology
will be the loss of a generation or more of scientists, farmers, and
others with the potential to investigate, develop, refine, and
implement alternatives to resource-intensive agriculture. Knocking
out that generation (and this is already happening to a large extent;
just check out the discipline roster of today's "plant", "crop", or
"agronomy" department compared to that even 10 years ago) will mean
that there may well BE no alternatives when the downstream
implications of biotech (and resource-intensive agriculture in
general) are more painfully evident. Ann
