U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Richard Rominger will speak at the
Center for Rural Affairs' 25th Anniversary Celebration meeting scheduled for
Saturday, November 21, 1998 at Central Community College Platte Campus in
Columbus, Nebraska. The day-long meeting is free and open to the public.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and the program runs until 5:00 p.m.
Secretary Rominger will be featured in a question-answer session devoted to
USDA's National Commission on Small Farms Report recommending changes to
federal policies that are biased against family farming. Mr. Rominger is a
California farmer and the second in command at the Department of
Agriculture.
A panel discussion on the implications of mergers in the seed industry for
family farmers will feature Neil Harl, a distinguished professor of
Economics at Iowa State University and one of the nation's leading experts
in agricultural law and economics. A second panel on a new rural development
model that brings good jobs, a healthy environment, and increased profits to
communities will feature Cornelia Flora, North Central Regional Center for
Rural Development, Iowa State University.
Other meeting sessions will explore agricultural business planning and
marketing, youth entrepreneurship, rural schools, global warming, and women
in agriculture. Michael Cotter, a humorist and storyteller from Austin,
Minnesota, will entertain after lunch.
