New CU Report on FQPA/Alternatives

As many members of this list are aware, the EPA is focusing on the
OP and carbamate insecticides among the first group of pesticides
re-evaluated under the Food Quality Protection Act. There is a raging
national debate over whether farmers can survive without currently
registered products. One grower, in a recent article in "The Packer" made
the ludicrous claim that loss of the OPs would triple food costs in America
and lead to an economic collapse in the U.S.

For a different perspective, please review and share the new
Consumers Union report on OP and carbamate alternatives, "Worst First". It
can be downloaded in PDF format at
<http://www.ecologic-ipm.com/worst1st.pdf>. The press release is also
available -- see the "What's Hot" section of the webpage. We will post on
the FQPA project webpage the detailed pre- and post-FQPA projections by crop
and state by the end of the month. A second report will be released next
month providing an overview of the degree of risk reduction possible by crop
as a result of adoption of preferred alternatives to OPs and carbamates.

We would appreciate any help in spreading the word about the
availability of the report -- it is free of charge over the Internet.
