Howdy, all--

In a conversation with a staffer from the US Bureau of Labor
Statistics (BLS) today, he cited a source and the latest figure on
the portion of the consumer dollar that farmers see. I thought the
citation might come in handy to some of you.

As per this January, 1998, ERS publication, 22 cents of the consumer
dollar goes to producers/farmers; the rest to other food system
sectors.

The citation for this:

/Agricultural Production in the United States/, Mary Ahearn, Jet
Yee, Eldon Ball, Richard Nehring. ERS Agricultural Information
Bulletin #740, January 1998.

To order a copy of the pub: 1-800-999-6779, and ask for AIB-740.
Prepaid it's $14 and $5 shipping. They charge an additional $10 if
you need them to bill your institution. Cheese and crackers!

BTW, the on-hold music is excruciating. I got a Lawrence Welk version
of a Wayne Newton song; then a Muzak version of "South of the
Border"; now if *that* isn't calculated to make constituents hang up,
I don't know what is :^)

peace
