UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA FACULTY POSITION
Sustainable Swine Production Systems
Position: Assistant Professor in Animal Science (12-month appointment,
administratively and programmatically responsible to the WCES Head and
Department of Animal Science Head with tenure track in the Department of
Animal Science, St. Paul)
Location: West Central Experiment Station (WCES), College of Agricultural,
Food, and Environmental Sciences, University of Minnesota, Morris, MN.
WCES is one of four sites conducting swine research at the University of
Minnesota.
Responsibilities:
Research (60%)
This faculty member would lead a research program designed to evaluate
existing and develop new sustainable swine production systems. The
research focus will be on the full range of swine production systems and
their biological, economic, social, and environmental sustainability within
the context of agricultural production systems. This systems research will
include efforts to improve the operation and acceptability of existing
swine production systems and be geared toward developing, enhancing, and
aligning production systems to various levels of labor, capital, and farm
family goals. Research will be conducted on-farms and at the West Central
Experiment Station. To achieve these objectives, the faculty member will
collaborate with teams of discipline experts, including farmers, to provide
site-specific knowledge about various swine production systems. This
faculty member will seek extramural funding and advise graduate students.
Outreach (40%)
This faculty member will provide leadership in developing educational
programs for evaluating sustainable pork production systems. Responding to
individual requests for information and/or assistance from farmers,
extension educators, agricultural producers and others will be an integral
part of this position's responsibilities. Additionally, the potential
exists for this faculty person to lend teaching expertise to course
offerings on the St. Paul Campus, the Morris Campus, and/or through the
University's emerging partnerships with other educational institutions.
Qualifications:
Minimum academic preparation: Ph.D. with emphasis in animal science is
required by date of appointment.
Desired academic preparation: Courses in livestock production, animal
health and nutrition, reproductive physiology, animal behavior,
experimental design, computer modeling, agricultural economics, rural
sociology, and public policy.
Experience:
Minimum experience: Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
and documented cooperation with co-workers.
Desired experience: Thorough understanding of pork production in a
variety of production settings; research experience; experience interacting
with pork producers; demonstrated ability to acquire grants and provide
leadership to research and outreach programs; computer and computing skills.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include
health, dental, and faculty life/disability insurance, social security,
faculty retirement (2-year waiting period) and opportunities for
sabbaticals and quarter leaves.
Date Available: January 1, 1999, or until a suitable candidate is found
