Food waste

Here's a food fact I thought some might find interesting (and horrible):

According to a new study released by the USDA, 96 billion pounds of food
is wasted annually - 1/4 of the food produced in the US! This included
food lost at the retail, consumer and food service levels - so basically
the grocery store (or farmer's market, or CSA, etc.), US at home, and
restaurants. Information is online at:

http://www.usda.gov/fcs/glean/fdwaste.txt

Why do we work hard enough to be able to waste 1/4 of our food?!
Hopefully we're not wasting too much of the organic food;)
