Outline for StrawBale course August 14-16, 1998
Friday
10-11- Final Registration & orientation
11-1- Opening circle and introductions. Specific needs accessed/ overview
of what this workshop's about. A look at the model and other strawbale
structures on site.
1-2 - Lunch
2-2:30- break
2:30-3:30 - Classroom session ( foundations, wall systems, drainage, roofs
& overhangs, load specs, tools, handling bales, vapour barriers,
windows & doors, building codes, wall finishes etc.)
3:30- 5 - Action session - Applying vapour barriers to foundation, using
the bale press
5:00-5:30 - clean up
5:30-6 Break
6-7 - Dinner * (earlier than usual)
8 - Video (power permitting)
Saturday
8:30-9:30 Breakfast
9:30-10 - Q & A session
10- 1- Action session - Community members join in to lay up the walls on
the community center.
1-2 Lunch
2-2:30 break
2:30-5 - Action session - Building top plates /securing the wall
5:30-6 clean up
6-6:30 break at 30 min. dinner bell
6:30 -7:30- Dinner
8- Media Presentation (power permitting) & or Fire circle
Sunday
8:30-9:30 - Breakfast
9:30-1- Action session - Completing the wall & preparing for wall finish
1-2 Lunch
2-2:30 Break
2:30-4:00- Demonstation: Making & applying plaster finishing
4:00-4:30- Cleanup
4:30-5 -Closing circle & evaluation
Prep -
Prepare top plates, get tools together , hang tarp, video set-up,
handouts, get materials not on site (check list below), alert members
Materials list - Baling wire, Baie press, bailng needles, bales, threaded
rod, bamboo or stickers, bracing, 3 tarps, rope, roll of 6mil black
plastic, string, blackboard, easel, chalk, markers, large drawing pad,
drills, saws, spikes, hammers & various nails, measurers, gloves, mini
bales, glass jars, model, handouts
masking tape,permanent markers, opague projector ? Video, table, clay pile,
2 screens, 4 shovels, 4 mortar hoes, 1 barrel clayslip, 6 buckets, chopped
straw, 2 wheelbarrows.
