International participation added a dimension of excitement and discovery to
what could have been a hum-drum program. One of the most exciting things
about working with amaranth is people's dedication to this deceptively
simple plant.
The level of knowledge in the meeting room was astounding. In addition to
farmers with vast experience growing the crop, we had an Armenian
biophysicist, a Russian expert on photosynthesis, Mexican experts in
economics and ethnobotany, American crop breeding experts, a botanist from
Hong Kong, and accomplished businesspeople from Austria and the Czech
Republic as well as from the U.S.A.
The amaranth crop in the area is doing very well and we enjoyed visiting the
fields under the blue Nebraska sky in perfect weather.
Thanks to all who participated and all who appreciate amaranth. We are
continuing to build an international network of people working on this
versatile crop that has so much potential to fill the protein needs of the
world.
