I think you are right, for purely practical reasons. The number of
minor food ingredients that could potentially come from GMO's is
astronomical. If pushed to label items that contain GMO-products,
manufacturers will just put a statement on everything such as:
"May contain products from genetically engineered crops."
Then, consumers won't really have any additional knowledge. They
already know that.
It would be much more efficient for those parties, who think GMO
derivation is an important issue, to label and market their products as
"GMO-Free."
Probably, the people pushing the labeling issue are more interested in
throwing up roadblocks for processors, than in actually increasing
information to consumers.
