The University of Minnesota's West Central Experiment Station in Morris, Minn.,
is developing a faculty position in sustainable swine production systems. This
faculty member would lead a research program designed to evaluate and develop
new sustainable swine production systems. This is a 60 percent research and 40
percent outreach position and wouild be a 12-month appointment. The official
title would be Assistant Professor in Animal Science and a minimum of a Ph.D. in
animal science is required. The date this position starts is Jan. 1, or until a
suitable candidate is found. This position is part of an alternative swine
research and outreach funding package developed by the Land Stewardship Project
in conjunction with the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Institute for
Sustainable Agriculture and approved by the 1998 Minnesota Legislature. Part of
this package will fund the establishment of research facilities and models
pertaining to alternative swine systems such as hoop houses, modified Swedish
deep-straw facilities, etc. This faculty position would be a great opportunity
for someone who wants to be on the ground floor of sustainable swine research
and outreach in the Upper Midwest.
