I'm looking for information on cases of organic labeling fraud. The two I
know of are the mislabeled banana case (filed by Nina Brothers of
California) in 1995, and the Glacial Ridge beans in 1996 (I think) in
Minnesota. I'm particularly interested in whether and where fraud was
ultimately discovered in the investigations of these two cases (or in
other cases), and also in the aftereffects on the organic certifiers
involved.
Not to re-open any old wounds, and I know that the history of organic
certification is generally free of fraud. I just want a general sketch.
Does anybody have any information, or other sources, on these or other
cases? Also, if there is a list which is more specifically devoted to
organic certification, please refer me there. Thanks very much -
