SECOND NATIONAL SMALL FARM CONFERENCE
DATE: October 12-15, 1999
LOCATION: REGAL RIVER FRONT HOTEL, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
THEME: BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE 21st CENTURY
AUDIENCE: Educators, Government Officials, Leaders of Small Farm
Programs and Organizations, Small farmers who can share effective
experiences or who are leaders, and can take good ideas back to their
communities or organizations.
CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES
The President's Budget for 1999 includes a $4 million new
appropriation for development of research and extension programs for
Small Farms. USDA is in the process of strengthening and broadening
its research and extension efforts for small farms significantly as a
result of the findings and recommendations of the National Commission
on Small Farms, independently of the new Small Farm Initiative
covered in the FY99 budget.
This conference will provide an opportunity for state and county
faculty, leaders from the small farm community, public and private
sectors including non-governmental organizations who work closely
with small farmers to share ideas, and examine new approaches to
programs for small farmers. This conference will include sessions on:
(1) Information sharing,
(2) Innovative approaches to small farm programming
(3) Skills development, such as "how to develop your tool kit for
direct marketing."
(4) Follow-up reports on issues identified at the Nashville
conference.
(5) Progress report on strategies for implementing the recommendations
as outlined by the National Commission on Small Farms.
(6) Special emphasis will be on collaboration and partnership as a
method to achieve a competitive market advantage.
Solicitations will be sent out by early fall of 1998, for poster papers and
exhibit booth space reservations. There will be limited numbers of
scholarships (expense paid travel) for students making presentations,
and for small farmers and ranchers who can take good ideas back to
their communities or organzations.
All state and county faculty currently involved in or who want to be involved in
research and extension programs, and other programs directed towards the problems
faced by small farmers and ranchers are encouraged to attend and participate.
