JOB ANNOUNCEMENT I

Marketing Coordinator

The Rural Development Center: The Rural Development Center (RDC) is a
community based agricultural training and resource center serving
farmworkers and family farmers in the Salinas Valley. We promote
self-reliance by helping aspiring/established family farmers gain the
skills and experience they need to initiate/enhance their own agriculture
operations and improve their economic condition. RDC staff are bilingual
and most educational activities are conducted in Spanish. Our programs
include: (1) A Small Farm Education Program, a five-month intensive
education and training program on small farm production and management,
with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices; (2) Training and
technical assistance in sustainable practices to family
farmers-in-training on the RDC property; (3) Outreach, training and
technical support to established Latino farmers in the region, to address
pollution prevention and environmental justice issues; and (4) a Food
Security Project to help low-income people in the region gain access to
affordable fresh organic vegetables, partly through the creation of a
farmers market, community gardens, Community Supported Agriculture
initiatives and a Youth Project.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Center Director, the
Marketing Coordinator will direct training and technical assistance to
Spanish-speaking family farmers in the region, to introduce them to a
range of options for marketing fresh vegetables, and to help them adopt
more efficient and profitable marketing strategies. This training and
technical assistance will be directed to individual family farmers as
well as to groups of farmers that chose to market jointly through a
variety of mechanisms, such as a marketing association orcooperative.
The position may require the supervision of the development and
installation a vegetable cooling and storage facility, and the management
and coordination of the use of the facility by participating farmers.
Related training activities will be incorporated in a marketing module of
the RDC's training program in small farm production and management, and
will include components in business planning, record- keeping, and
marketing and finance options. The Marketing Coordinator will work
closely with other staff to strengthen and enhance the overall work of
the RDC.

Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills in both
English and Spanish, familiarity with the condition and culture of the
farmworker and family farmer communities, and experience in working with
these constituencies is highly desirable. In addition, the position
requires:

I. strong practical experience, knowledge and understanding
of agricultural marketing, including non-traditional marketing approaches;

I. strong practical experience, knowledge and understanding
of sustainable agriculture, farming practices and related research;

I. a good understanding of environmental safety issues as
they relate to agriculture;

I. ability to develop relationships and resources to support
the project;

I. flexibility and willingness to perform diverse tasks;
willingness to work on a varying schedule (e.g. evening
and weekend classes, meeting and events); and willingness and ability to
travel.

Project Coordinator

the Center Director.

Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills in both
English and Spanish, familiarity with the condition and culture of the
farmworker and family farmer communities, and experience in working with
these constituencies is highly desirable. In addition, the position
