It would be relatively easy to change a government beurocracy compared to the
present corporate conciousness. The direction the dominators in an industry take
dictates the direction of the government through lobbying, campaign
contributions, etc. We seem to have the best government that money can buy.
Seems pretty grim until you look around at SA conferences and state organic
certification meetings. There's a whole bunch of us out here growing high
quality, safe food in spite of agri-businesses best attempts to dominate the
food industries. May I suggest we spend as much time in support of positive
movements that we spend protesting. Both are necessary and we sometimes forget
what we can do as individuals on a local level:
Buy from family farmers, buy organic, start a garden, support community efforts,
call or write an elected official and give them an "attaboy" when she/he votes
the way you want... Hell, some people may even decide to become organic farmers
or market gardeners.
A way out of the dilemma may be to act like the chemical past never happened and
get vocal about how much we appreciate iy when they do mention programs that
move growers away from toxic farming.
