Frank, I would prefer that my ideas be judged on the basis of their own merit.
(I myself am not for sale). And I'm not an academic, nor do I have a PhD. (my
parents both do, and I've consulted for a few), but there are things you can't
learn in institutions because they haven't been incorporated into the body of
public knowledge yet. And SOMEBODY has to do that. It's often better to just do
it rather than try to convince someone else to take the step instead, or with.
I've lived in Mexico (which unlike the U.S., considers revolution to be a
legitimate institution) for 25 years and work with farmers, bureaucrats and
politicians on agricultural and ecological issues, mainly by organizing the
projects that are needed.
One of the things I appreciated here is the availability of many kinds of seedling
(traditionally seedling) fruit. Also, I'd say people tend to interact a bit more
(convivir), although this particular town is a little reserved (apathetic) for my
taste (but it's got an outstanding tianguis - outdoor market, with a lot of local
and regional crops brought directly in). Jose Clemente Orozco was born here (and
for some reason at age 7 or 8, when taken by my parents to select a picture for my
bedroom, I INSISTED on a good hand painted copy of one of his paintings - wouldn't
have anything else - not exactly typical for a little kid. That was in the
states).
I can provide a few fancy references and some impressive IQ test results, but none
of that will make anything I say true - it either is or it isn't or it's somewhere
inbetween, depending on where you're coming from (and where you're going). I'm
not going to be convincing to anybody who isn't ready for it. I've done a lot and
still somehow feel I haven't really begun yet, while feeling close to it.
