Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
SARE Program:
The mission of the Southern Region SARE program is to promote and fund
research and education activities that increase knowledge and extend
information about sustainable agriculture systems. This mission is
accomplished by funding research projects that investigate the
scientific basis for sustainable agriculture; education projects that
expand and extend the knowledge of sustainability to farmers,
consumers, researchers, educators and policymakers; and producer
grants that recognize that farmers are innovators and repositories of
sustainable agriculture knowledge. The SARE program is funded by USDA
and is jointly managed by The University of Georgia and Fort Valley
State University. The Southern Region SARE Administrative Council is
the policymaking and priority setting body for the program, with
policy implementation guidance provided by four regional
administrative advisors representing The University of Georgia and
Fort Valley State University. The host consortium office is located
at the Griffin Campus, which is approximately 40 miles south of
Atlanta, GA. The Southern Region includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma,
Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and the U.S.
Virgin Islands.
Position:
Program Director for the Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture
Research and Education (SARE) Program. This is a full-time (100%)
non-tenure track faculty position located at The University of
Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Griffin
Campus. Department affiliation will depend on discipline of
successful candidate. Position duration is contingent upon the
availability of grant funds.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in agriculturally-related field is required. Experience in
interdisciplinary, integrated sustainable agriculture systems research
preferred. Strong interpersonal, administrative and communication
skills. Computer literacy is essential (Internet, word processing,
spread sheet, data base management).
Job Duties:
The Program Director provides technical and administrative direction
to the competitive grants process for the selection of SARE research,
education and producer projects. The Program Director is responsible
for providing technical assistance and project review for scientific
research and education projects. The incumbent will work closely with
the Southern Region Administrative Council to develop an Annual Call
for Proposals and evaluation guidelines for SARE projects and will
provide leadership for evaluation activities to measure program
impacts and progress toward established goals. The Program Director
manages an annual program budget of over $2.5 M and an administrative
budget of approximately $200,000 and directly supervises three
full-time SARE staff members. The Program Director provides regular
accounting to USDA-CSREES and other funding agencies for progress of
program, impacts, accomplishments and deficiencies and develops an
annual Plan of Work for the implementation of the SARE program. The
Program Director will maintain regular communications with host
consortium, administrative advisors, Administrative Council,
professional development program management consortium, Technical
Advisory Committee, USDA and other regional SARE program staff, as
well as professional and volunteer organizations to keep abreast of
trends, potential linkages and areas of concern. The incumbent will
be expected to actively seek opportunities for leveraging additional
funds for projects associated with the program.
Salary: $50,000 plus benefits
