I am supportive of consumers' right to know what is in their food and/or
how it was produced (within reason).
However, I suspect that the likeliest outcome of a push for mandatory
labelling of foods that have some GE component is what has already
happened with listing of oils in foods, ie, the famous "may contain"
clause -- as in "vegetable oil (may contain palm kernel, cocoanut, soy,
canola, corn, etc, etc....)". Consumers won't really be any further
ahead to have 80% of prepared food saying "may contain genetically
engineered ingredients" than they are now.
Of course, this will not apply to folks who buy direct from, and know
personally, the producer. And, particularly, those who minimize their
intake of processed, packaged foodstuffs ( a laudable goal in itself).
Still, fire away at the Codex reps, if it makes you feel better...I don't think
it will do any actual harm, and just might serve to keep the
powers-that-be alert to the fact that there are widespread public
concerns about this implications and impacts of these technologies (and
their commercial and political proponents)
