While the battle for decent USDA organic standards is far from over,
editorials such as this help point to the many positive aspects that
already can be seen from the process:

1. The flood of respoenses will do a hundred times more than any series
of panels, hearings, etc. to create awareness and recognition within USDA
of just what constitutes appropriate standards.

2. Public awareness of organic production has increased enormously - and
neither farmers, the government or the public can any longer treat organic
production as simply "fringe" type farming outside the mainstream.
3. Solidarity within the organic farming constituencies has been
strengthened enormously. How can anyone not be amazed and encouraged by
this type of response?

I only wish we could get this type of support when
the Farm Bill comes up for consideration and for other types of
legislation and funding bills that are so vital to furthering sustainable
agriculture. Maybe this will be a turning point (?).
