Susan Snow asked: "How does organic differ from sustainable agriculture?"

In 1994 I published an article titled "An Introduction to Low-Input Sustainable
Farming Systems" in the Proceedings of the 13th Annual Oklahoma Horticulture
Industries Show, as part of a growers panel on low-input melon production.

Later this article was picked up and re-published by New Renaissance
journal in 1996 in the special issue on Farming the Future: Ecological Agriculture
in the 21st Century as an article titled "Towards a Sustainable Agriculture."

Some of the text could be re-worked to bring it up to date but nevertheless it
still provides a workable intro to the concepts and goals behind the
organic-sustainable low-input continuum.

As a background to the article fyi, one of the intentions of the piece was
bridge building to an audience composed of both organic & conventional
farmers, thus the low-input angle was emphasized as the lynchpin, a
meeting ground where many farmers share something in common.
