DPR SELECTS 20 FOR PEST MANAGEMENT ALLIANCES

SACRAMENTO -- Cal/EPA's Department of Pesticide Regulation today
announced the selection of 20 participants for DPR's Pest Management
Alliance, a new program devoted to reducing pesticide risks.

Participants will share a total of more than $76,000 from the Alliance
to evaluate their current pest management practices. These evaluations
will then be used to complete plans for devising innovative,
reduced-risk pest management projects. The most promising proposals
will share about $700,000 in Alliance grants, to be announced in June
by DPR.=20

The Alliance will promote a dialogue between DPR and select members of
the regulated community. Alliance participants will explain their
unique pest management problems and constraints. In turn, DPR will
offer its perspective on regulatory concerns and priorities for
reducing pesticide risks.=20

"The Alliance addresses some of the most important issues in pest
management," said DPR Chief Deputy Director Jean-Mari Peltier. "Some
proposals focus on priorities created by the federal Food Quality
Protection Act, while others deal with ground and surface water
contamination, or pesticide drift. But all offer new ideas for
effective pest management that will also help protect people and our
environment," said Peltier.=20

The 20 participants include various commodity groups, the California
Association of School Safety Managers, and the University of
California, Davis. Their proposals aim to bring new and innovative pest
management solutions to farms, poultry and beef operations, school
buildings and grounds, and roadside weed control.

DPR expects to fund about seven grants, each ranging up to $100,000
per year. Grant recipients must match Alliance awards. Successful
proposals may involve applied research, demonstration projects, or a
combination of the two. Projects also must serve as a practical model
for new pest practices throughout an industry or across the state.

This year, DPR plans to award a total of about $1.5 million from
various grant programs for reduced-risk pest control, thanks to a $1
million appropriation from the Legislature.

[Note alliances have been formed for these areas. For a complete list
