Field Day: Organic Field Crops Field Day

An update on research by Ohio State’s Organic Food and Farming Education and Research (OFFER) program at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s (OARDC) West Badger Farm, Apple Creek Road in Wooster. Among the topics: Organic corn variety trial, specialty small grains, organic disease biocontrol and organic no-till. Co-sponsored by the SARE Professional Development Program program in Ohio.

Grant Writing Workshop

University of Illinois Extension, Sangamon County Office in Springfield, IL

llinois and Indiana producers and agriculture professionals can find out how to write successful grant proposals and learn more about the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) Farmer Rancher Grant Program at a video workshop.

The workshop will include information to help farmers compete for grants from theNCR-SARE Farmer Rancher Grant Program. Producers interested in research, demonstrations or educating others about profitable, environmentally sound, socially responsible agricultural are encouraged to attend.

Field Day at Red Fern Farm

Red Fern Farm is a family owned nursery and farm run and owned by Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice. It is the site of ongoing research on a variety of tree crops and forest farming systems. We raise and sell container grown tree seedlings and medicinal planting roots well suited for the Midwest. For our local customers we also have meat goats for sale. Tom Wahl is an NCR-SARE grant recipient.

2008 Annual Conference of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy

Join ALBC for a special conference with seminars that focus on integrating multi-tasking livestock for productive farms. Tillers International will be our host and venue for this conference. Their unique farm and mission demonstrate the value of multi-tasking livestock breeds. Friday and Saturday nights will feature special meals which include rare breeds in the menu. NCR-SARE grant recipient, Ed Snavely, will be speaking. There will be opportunities for members to network and share their experiences, successes, and hopes. Plan to stay and enjoy Tillers’ Community Harvest Fest on Sunday as well. Integrated Management Strategies for Sustainable Cropping Systems

Cover crops, long-term crop rotations, no-till, strip row cropping, and natural or organic production are all useful strategies for developing an operation that will improve a farm's profits and protect natural resources. These and other methods reduce input use, erosion, and agricultural chemical runoff and can provide access to unique market opportunities.
