Research & Education (R&E) Program

cattle grazingWhat’s a SARE R&E Grant?
Oklahoma researchers seeking to improve integrated cattle and pecan systems hope to maximize the benefits of these natural partners. Cattle graze on grass that otherwise would require mowing, deposit nutrients through manure and prune the lower limbs of pecan trees. In return, orchard shade encourages cattle to graze and gain weight in hot weather. To refine the system, SARE-funded Oklahoma State University horticulturists are working to replace commercial fertilizer and “typical” orchard spraying programs with legume pastures and a customized pest management system based on scouting and weather monitoring.

Over the three-year project, native pecan trees in plots with legume pastures averaged nearly 700 pounds of pecans per acre and over 250 pounds of beef gain per acre. [For more information, go to http://www.SARE.org/projects/ and search for LS99-102.]

About the Program

Since 1988, SARE has provided competitive grants for sustainable agriculture research and education through four regional administrative councils. Generally ranging from $30,000 to $200,000, they fund projects that usually involve scientists, producers and others in an interdisciplinary approach.

Many SARE-funded projects involve on-farm research trials with crops and/or livestock; other projects have studied quality of life, agricultural marketing, integrated farming systems, and soil and water conservation. Successful proposals typically include economic analysis and outreach components. The program also funds education and demonstration projects, including the development of farmer-to-farmer networks.
