The Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture
Honorable Mentions

Herby Radmann, Menomenie, Wisconsin Herby Radmann

Herby Radmann created a unique fish farm practice, the Bullfrog Fish Farm, by adapting basic aquaculture principles to his land and water resources. After seven years of research, development and a positive environmental assessment, he began raising fish in 1994. Radmann now raises 15,000 to 20,000 pounds of rainbow trout annually.

Radmann operates Bullfrog Fish Farm based on his vision of agricultural sustainability, from his use of water - pumped into a gravity-flow system to raise fish, then filtered back into the ground via a wetland - to a natural disposal system for discarding fish processing waste. He strives for the tastiest and healthiest fish and developed a local market niche for his product, proclaiming his rainbow trout and smoked fish the best in the area. Indeed, his "Eat My Fish" slogan is ubiquitous in his advertising. In addition to fresh water fish, he offers recreation, from pond-side fishing to educational group tours. To demonstrate how he values his rural community, he developed a "limited liability company" so his workers and the community can invest in the company.

"I was immediately impressed by the synergy of environment, community and economics at Bullfrog Fish Farm."
~Becca Daggett, Institute for Local Self Reliance

This producer merited an honorable mention from SARE judges in the program's 2004 Patrick Madden Award contest. Impressed by the breadth of farming and ranching operations nominated across the country, SARE's judging panel recommended more than 30 producers to be recognized as part of the contest.
