The Patrick Madden Award
for Sustainable Agriculture
Honorable Mentions
| Scott Mathieson, Sebastopol, CA |
 |
| Scott Mathieson built his farming
operation on the concept of direct marketing. He began by developing
a popular salad mix, which he delivered to local grocery stores.
Later, he began participating in several farmers markets. Today,
his 400-family community-supported agriculture program provides
the majority of his business. The farm is alive with volunteers
who pack CSA boxes or participate in educational farm activities.
Mathieson uses very few off farm resources. He maintains
cover crops and applies compost to improve soil fertility, and built
bird boxes and hedgerows to encourage beneficial insects. He modified
four of the farm's vehicles and a generator to run exclusively on
surplus vegetable oil. Electric power on the land is supplemented
with wind and solar energy. Past president of the California Certified
Organic Farmers, Mathieson has spoken numerous times at the Ecological
Farm Conference. His farm is open to tour groups, interns and community
members alike.

desire to develop a model sustainable agriculture operation,
using a myriad of innovative ideas."

This producer merited an honorable mention from SARE judges
in the program's 2004 Patrick Madden Award contest. Impressed
by the breadth of farming and ranching operations nominated
across the country, SARE's judging panel recommended more
than 30 producers
to be recognized as part of the contest.
