| A pioneer of diversification and sustainable
farming, Frederick Hays has integrated agriculture, aquaculture
and agroforestry into a holistic system that enhances the environment.
Working on 150 heavily forested acres, Hays maintains what he calls
his "botanical wealth" by cultivating woodland crops like shiitake
mushrooms, berries, ginseng and well-managed timber. His aquaculture
operation includes a variety of ornamental and game fish, as well
as aquatic plants. He succeeds, in part, because of his willingness
to adapt to nature and his customers.
With help from two SARE farmer grants, Hays demonstrated
intensive hybrid bass production and further integrated his forest
farming operations. An active participant in many rural development
organizations, Hays was instrumental in the creation of the Center
for Sustainable Resources, Inc. In addition, Hays helped establish
the W.V. Ginseng Growers Association and has led initiatives involving
wild-simulated growing techniques for ginseng production, a profitable
industry for rural landowners. He shares his expertise with others
by providing demonstrations and workshops on sustainable practices.
