The Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture
Honorable Mentions

Frederick Hays, Elkview, West Virginia Frederick Hays

A pioneer of diversification and sustainable farming, Frederick Hays has integrated agriculture, aquaculture and agroforestry into a holistic system that enhances the environment. Working on 150 heavily forested acres, Hays maintains what he calls his "botanical wealth" by cultivating woodland crops like shiitake mushrooms, berries, ginseng and well-managed timber. His aquaculture operation includes a variety of ornamental and game fish, as well as aquatic plants. He succeeds, in part, because of his willingness to adapt to nature and his customers.

With help from two SARE farmer grants, Hays demonstrated intensive hybrid bass production and further integrated his forest farming operations. An active participant in many rural development organizations, Hays was instrumental in the creation of the Center for Sustainable Resources, Inc. In addition, Hays helped establish the W.V. Ginseng Growers Association and has led initiatives involving wild-simulated growing techniques for ginseng production, a profitable industry for rural landowners. He shares his expertise with others by providing demonstrations and workshops on sustainable practices.

"Our future resource base includes improved biological health of these lands with an improved economic base from the forest, a healthy fish and herb business, and a circle of close friends and family with most food and energy needs met on the farm."
~Fred Hays, Elkview, W.V.

This producer merited an honorable mention from SARE judges in the program's 2004 Patrick Madden Award contest. Impressed by the breadth of farming and ranching operations nominated across the country, SARE's judging panel recommended more than 30 producers to be recognized as part of the contest.
