The Patrick Madden Award
for Sustainable Agriculture
Honorable Mentions
| Dave & Chris Colson, Durham, Maine |
 |
| For more than two decades, Dave and
Chris Colson have worked to create a diverse, well-managed and well-marketed
organic vegetable farm. Since 1983, the Colsons have developed a
diversified crop list - salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, squash,
brassicas and herbs - that fits both their climate and their customer
needs. They sell their produce to members of their community-supported
agriculture operation, two natural food stores and local restaurants.
They not only receive premium prices from their customers, but also
have helped cultivate demand for locally grown produce.
A passive solar barn and high tunnels help extend
the season past the typical Maine growing period. They cultivate
just one-half of their acreage for vegetable production and use
cover crops, green manures and compost to build the soil. Recognized
regionally for their farming expertise, the Colsons are perennial
presenters at conferences and participate in the Northeast Organic
Network (NEON). Dave is a past president of the Maine Organic Farmers
& Gardeners Association.

"The standards
they set for themselves are very high. As a result, we CSA members
get fresh, local produce that is the best."

This producer merited an honorable mention from SARE judges
in the program's 2004 Patrick Madden Award contest. Impressed
by the breadth of farming and ranching operations nominated
across the country, SARE's judging panel recommended more
than 30 producers
to be recognized as part of the contest.
