| Inheriting more than a century of
ranching tradition, Dan and Jeanne Carver carry on a profitable
and sustainable business on the Imperial Stock Ranch. The 130-year-old
ranch, which produced cattle, grains and hay throughout its history,
is best known for its lamb and wool production from the unique Columbia
sheep breed. The Carvers wanted to continue sheep production, and
with help from a Western SARE farmer/rancher grant, they moved into
direct marketing. Their detailed sales program has them supplying
lamb to high-end restaurants, marketing wool fibers in unique yarn-and-pattern
kits, and selling tanned lamb pelts in clothing.
The Carvers' management plan includes a bevy of practices
to safeguard the environment on their 30,000 acres - installing
miles of fencing to reduce grazing herd size; protecting 75 miles
of creek; building 60 dams to create watering holes for domestic
stock and wildlife; and protecting springs with fences while re-directing
water into troughs. They stay actively involved in local watershed
restoration, incorporating it into their way of life. Serving as
volunteers, supporting charities and playing active roles in their
community, Jeanne and Dan willingly share their knowledge and zeal
for all facets of sustainable agriculture.
