| Michael Alexander and Sharlene Grunerud
manage No Cattle Company, an organic farm that straddles the Mimbres
River in southwestern New Mexico. Fourteen acres of the farm's total
43 are cultivated, irrigated from a 132-year-old irrigation ditch.
They grow fruit in nine acres of orchard, with the remaining cultivated
acreage in mixed vegetables and flowers. They leave the remainder
of the farm to wildlife, including many species of lizards and snakes,
as well as raccoons, rabbits and visiting big mammals, from mountain
lions to bears.
Their need for organically produced bedding plants
led Michael and Sharlene to start a greenhouse business, which now
prospers. They market fruit, winter squash and onions wholesale,
and sell those commodities directly at the Silver City Farmers Market,
which Sharlene has managed for nine years. They host tours for 5-
and 6-year-olds in the state's Head Start program, university students,
garden club members and farmers. They find these tours a great way
to pass on their organic management strategies such as bat houses,
perches for insect-eating birds and green manure rotations.
