2009 Report Summary
South Dakota started their SARE State Program in late fall 2009, with Gary Lemme as the first State Coordinator. A state plan of work was submitted and approved, started forming an Advisory Committee, with four extension educators, 1 NRCS, 1 federal/state/tribal agency, 2 farmers/ranchers and 1 NGO. FACE of SARE promotion/outreach activities included creating materials for SD initiatives and producer grants, 4 presentations at field days/workshops, 4 SARE conference booths and press releases to CES and NRCS outlets. Task Forces were organized for each of the 3 initiatives. Participation in activities included 20 Extension, 9 other University, and 20 NRCS personnel. Of the 20, 18 reported they answered client questions, 20 incorporated into programming and 5 delivered new programming. Travel scholarships for South Dakota educators was reported by North Dakota, using the 2007 and 2008 Dakota’s travel scholarship funds.

2010 Plan of Work Summary
South Dakota will continue the 2009 POW due to the late start of their program. This will include the 3 initiatives: (1) Sustainable Grass-Fed Cattle Production and Marketing, (2) Successful Incorporation of Cover Crops in Sustainable Cropping Systems and (3) Local Food Systems in Native American Communities plus the Scaling Up Local Foods Regional Initiative. Targeted audience for the initiatives include CES & NRCS educators, agri-science teachers, 1994 Tribal College Instructors and tribal youth center directors school officials and elders, and ag-bankers. Initial membership of the Advisory Committee will consist of 1 SD AC member, 3 SDSU personnel, 3 partner organizations (tribal, high school and NRCS) and 3 farmer/ranchers with plans to meet face-to-face in February 2010. Travel scholarships for 35 educators are available to attend the South Dakota professional development activities.

Dr. Gary Lemme is currently Professor and former Dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University. Lemme has a BS and MS from SDSU in ag education and agronomy. His PhD is in agronomy from the University of Nebraska. He has held faculty positions at Michigan State University and South Dakota State University. He has served in administrative roles at the University of Hawaii (academic programs), University of Minnesota (regional research and outreach center and agricultural experiment station) and Michigan State University (research and agricultural experiment station) prior to coming to SDSU. Dr. Lemme has been involved in community development activities in many of these professional roles with a focus and professional commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural communities.
