2009 Report Summary
Ohio’s professional development program has co-coordinators providing educator training. The coordinators promoted SARE at 9 conferences, 3 farmer grant writing workshops, made 10 presentations and provided consultation for all NCR SARE programs. Programming partners included Ohio State University Extension, KBS/MSU Extension, and NRCS. 2010 Initiatives were Crop Production Systems, Marketing Training and on-going Communications and New Extension Professional Training. Reported outcomes for the trainings were: 145 educators answered client questions, 95 provided individual consultations (64 from NRCS), 98 developed new contacts, 106 incorporated into programming, 77 delivered new programming, 39 used in newsletter or other media. Six travel scholarships were awarded totaling $3,480.

2010 Plan of Work Summary
Plans for Ohio’s 2010 SARE Professional Development Program includes 5 initiatives offered by the Co-Coordinators, Mike Hogan and Alan Sundermeier. Face of SARE activities included with the normal presentations, promotional activities and grant workshop/consultations are a quarterly newsletter and Sustainable Agriculture Website. There will be PDP training activities for the 5 initiatives: (1) Scaling Up Local Food Systems Regional Training targeting 10 educators, (2) Multi-State Alternative Crop Management Study Tour, (3) Farm Lender Workshop, (4) Organic Production System Webinar, and (5) New Extension Professional Training. Overall, the coordinators are targeting over 60 educators. Estimated outreach/promotion/communication targets over 171 educators. $8,000 worth of travel scholarships is available for 10 to 15 educators.

Mike Hogan serves as Co-Coordinator on the Sustainable Agriculture Team and the Ohio State Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR SARE) Program. He is a tenured Ohio State University Extension Associate Professor with Ohio State University Agriculture and Natural Resources. Mike has been an OSU Extension Educator for 22 years, serving 14 years as Ohio’s Sustainable Agriculture Co-Chair.  He specializes in small farm management, sustainable production systems, Christmas tree production and business management. Hogan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture (1984) and a Masters of Science Degree in Agricultural Education (1985) from West Virginia University. He and his wife Susan have two college-aged children.

Alan Sundermeier serves as Co-Coordinator on the Sustainable Agriculture Team and the Ohio State Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR SARE) Program. He has  been an Ohio State University Extension Educator for 13 years. He specializes in agronomic crop production focusing on cover crops, soil quality, and organic grain production. Sundermeier holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture (1977) and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Management (1995). He was raised on a crop and livestock farm in Northwest Ohio. He and his wife Sandra have 3 children.
