2009 Report Summary
Michigan reported promoting SARE at 8 events, having one grant funding workshop, assisting
with graduate, farmer/rancher and R&E proposals and multiple interactions with others while
representing SARE. Program partners include Michigan State University, Animal Ag in the
Environment Team, NRCS, Michigan Integrated Food and Farming Systems and other
sustainable agriculture organizations. Out of five initiatives, Michigan reported 13 educators
answered client questions, 17 developed new contacts, 22 incorporated into programming, 19
delivered new programming, and 12 used in newsletters and other media. Seventeen travel
scholarships totaling $7,200 and ten mini-grants totaling $13,000 were awarded.
2010 Plan Of Work Summary
SARE promotional events for 2010 include two Farmer’s Forums at the 2010 Michigan Family
Farms Conference, a panel discussion at the 2010 Small Farms Conference. The Michigan SARE
website will promote SARE events and announcements. Michigan’s initiatives include two that
are continued from 2009: (1) Sustainable Animal Production and (2) Other Sustainable
Agriculture Support and three new initiatives (1) Scaling Up Local Food Systems regional
training, (2) Sustainable Organic Agriculture-New Agriculture Network-NAN and (3) Youth
Educator Professional Development. Michigan will coordinate the tri-state NAN initiative.
Michigan State Sustainable Agriculture Program expects 55 educators to report intermediate
(behavioral) outcomes for 2010. Fifteen $500 travel scholarships ($7,500) and 7 $1000 ($4,900)
mini-grants will be offered.

Mutch has more than 27 years of research and Extension experience in organic farming, IPM, cover crops and sustainable agriculture. He has served on the NCR-SARE Administrative Council, Technical Committee and Producer Grants Program. In July 2007, Mutch became Michigan’s Sustainable Agriculture State Coordinator for NCR-SARE. His career emphasis has been on low-input and organic farming systems. His applied research focuses on participatory projects that use farmer advisory teams to direct and validate the work. Mutch manages ten OCIA-certified organic research acres.
