Southern SARE Grantee-Produced Info Product
Community Food System Explorer
The Community Food System Explorer is a website developed to shed light on factors that influence the sustainability of food systems in Virginia and North Carolina. With the help of a Southern SARE grant, Dr. Jonah Fogel at Virginia Cooperative Extension and other students and faculty from North Carolina and Virginia Universities completed case studies around the Appalachian region to determine the various components of the food system that contribute to or interfere with its sustainability. This research contributed to the creation of an interactive map that will assist food systems stakeholders to assess the current demographics, assets, consumption patterns, health indicators, agribusiness locations and land use in the region.
