Screening Open-Pollinated Vegetable Varieties for Local Markets in North Dakota

Marvin Baker, Theresa Podoll, and Steve Zwinger received an NCR-SARE Farmer Rancher grant to increase the number of open-pollinated vegetable varietal choices well-suited to organic production systems and local markets in North Dakota. They screened and identified dozens of varieties of interest to North Dakota market growers.  

According to Podoll, "the number of farmers markets in North Dakota has increased. With the development of farmers markets and localized food systems, seed producers and farmers serving these markets seek to identify varieties with agronomic traits suited to organic production systems and quality traits of interest to local and regional markets."

Baker, Podoll, and Zwinger each screened about twenty varieties. Overall, they discovered varieties that had traits of interest to their operations. These varieties included: Crystal, Bison, Nordak and Viking potatoes; Cavalier, Cannonball, Sheyenne, Doublerich, Millet’s Dakota, Manitoba, and Orange King tomatoes; Homesteader and Alaska peas; Pinky popcorn; Golden Gem sweet corn; Granite State cantaloupe; Copenhagen cabbage; and Niagara cucumber.
