Beekeeping Class at Rodale Institute
The Honeybee Conservancy at Rodale Institute consists of three separate workshops that promote natural and sustainable beekeeping practices through education. Price includes a hive, bees, supplies and classes. Hives can be hosted on the Institute's 333 acre organic farm in Kutztown, PA, and the $150 hosting fee will be waived for the first year.
This project will:
- Educate people interested in beekeeping about the current issues facing honeybees and sustainable solutions
- Design and develop a pollinator habitat on the Rodale Institute farm
- Help individual beekeepers get started by hosting their hives on our land, if they don't have space at their home
- Create a network of stewards that will first consider the well-being of the honeybee when engaging in beekeeping practices
Instructor Meme Thomas, Director of Baltimore Honey is presenting this workshop series. She is a member of the AFB-American Federation of Beekeepers, EAS-Eastern Apiculture Society, BUMBA Bowie Upper Marlboro Beekeepers Association, and HCBA - Howard County Beekeepers Association. Meme received the Maryland State Beekeepers Association 2010 George Imirie Award for excellence in beekeeping education.
Participants in our program will receive a unique hive that class instructor Meme Thomas developed: The Thomas Hybrid Hive. This hive is a combination of a top bar hive and the traditional Langstroth hive, proving a great habitat for the bees and easy access for keepers. The bees that participants will receive are Italian and are very calm.
The value of the items you will receive through the Complete Honeybee workshop is: Thomas Hybrid Hive - $400, Italian bee colony - $200, miscellaneous beekeeping tools and class tuition.
