New American Farm Photo Contest

monarch chrysalis and larva

Rex Dufour

West Honorable Mention

This photo shows a monarch larva, chrysalis and aphids, with organic alfalfa in the background. They are feeding on narrowleaf milkweed that was planted as part of a hedgerow of native perennials in order to attract beneficial organisms to Fong Farms. The aphid, larva and chrysalis represent diversity on farm, as well as non-pest alternate hosts for parasites and predators feeding on farm pests.

West Honorable Mention

Taro (also known as kalo) is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants and it is still an important part of local tradition in Hawaii. Constant flow of water in wetland taro is used to lower soil temperatures in order to inhibit disease. As an alternative to chemical controls, the water level is raised to drown weeds.
